Every Tool is Not a Hammer.

Imagine someone believes a hammer is the right tool for every single job in their house. They take this concept so far that they try (in vain) to wash their window with a hammer until the window is broken.

That’s what it’s like if you overuse a communication technique. When you’re first starting, it’s fine to overuse labels or mirrors a bit. In fact, if you’re doing it right, you probably feel like you’re using them too much.

But there is an extreme, you can’t mirror back everything someone says and expect that to work. You’ll need to mix in labels and questions with mirrors to add some variety.

Keep that in mind as we learn more techniques. No single technique is a silver bullet.
