Make It About Them

All of the best connections I’ve made have been focused on the other person without expecting anything in return.

Sometimes I make it about me, and it doesn’t work.

When I make it about the person I’m talking to, that’s when impactful moments and deep connections are born.

I think of prompting my grandpa to tell me about his time in the navy.

Or talking to another coach about how life in Australia is different from life in the U.S.

In order to make deep connections, we need to make it about them. We can:

Ask one more question before sharing our perspective.

Let them tell one more story before telling one of ours.

Leave 5 seconds more silence before responding.

“Stay in their world” just a little longer before we share our own experience.

I guarantee that some will be grateful because you made them feel heard.
